POKOTABI / Ebisu Coffee
ヱビス珈琲
Ebisu Coffee in Orisano, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, serves shaved ice pairing fruit with flavours such as peach, Earl Grey and almond, alongside siphon-brewed coffee and a weekly lunch.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Ebisu Coffee, part of the pleasure of ordering shaved ice is choosing what goes with the fruit. One visitor had come hoping for peach, but chose kiwi and almond milk because of the time of day. The generous serving had almond tofu and kiwi inside; they found the almond flavour gently sweet and easy to enjoy, and were surprised to hear that the ice was natural ice. Another way to enjoy peach is with Earl Grey and custard. The menu’s “Peach, Custard and Earl Grey” layers peach with plum purée, milk syrup, custard sauce and Earl Grey syrup—a different take from a bowl focused on peach alone.
There are plenty of other fruit-and-syrup combinations, too. American cherries come with sour-cream milk syrup and dark-cherry compote, while figs are paired with fresh caramel, anglaise and nuts. The Setouchi Lemon Pie shaved ice combines honeyed lemon, lemon purée and peel with fragrant pie pastry and milk. One diner singled out the fruit syrup and crisp pastry, making it a tempting choice for anyone who likes a change of texture in their shaved ice.
Visitors describe the ice as light and fluffy, and the servings as substantial. It may be best to settle in and take your time, though one person who tried the pear shaved ice was already thinking about ordering another. Seasonal fruit also gives you a reason to return. For a café-style drink, there is siphon-brewed coffee; one customer enjoyed its aroma and flavour enough to have a refill.
For a meal, consider the weekly lunch. One week’s offering included sweet-and-savoury pork sauté, minced-meat kinpira with daikon and carrot, spinach dressed with tofu, salad, sixteen-grain rice, soup and pickles. The menu changes weekly, but it makes Ebisu Coffee an option for a proper meal as well as coffee or something sweet. The café is in Orisano, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka, and opens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 17. Some visitors have booked ahead for shaved ice, so if you have a seasonal dish in mind, it is worth checking booking arrangements and availability in advance.
